..His calm manner reassuring us we were in good hands..”

[extract from Janet Richardson from her article in Towpath Talk following a Helmsman course]

..However we felt more at ease when our RYA instructor Bob Strachan arrived, his calm manner reassuring us we were in good hands.Once out on the River, Bob showed me how to turn the boat using the current. It was almost 5pm when we arrived back at the marina, tired – as Bob predicted we would be – but with a great sense of achievement.

”The amount of information presented was excellent…”

Madeleine and I would like to express our thanks to Alvechurch Boat Centres and particularly Bob Strachan for the excellent course we experienced last week. The amount of information presented was excellent and we both have confidence now to manage our first boat, a Sea Otter 31, arriving in October.
Thanks again.

”Bob was absolutely first class…”

Just a short note to say how much we enjoyed the RYA Helmsman course we did on Saturday, despite the horrendous weather! Bob was absolutely first class and very patient – we learned a lot.

Thank you for your patience with us and imparting your words of wisdom

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience with us and imparting your words of wisdom and advice over the last couple of days.

The days, despite the weather were filled with joyful boating, which is what it is all about.

Both myself and mostly Paula, have grown immensely in confidence as a consequence and we shall feel safer, forearmed to face the various incongruities that the Inland Waterways may have in store for us.

I hope that your days, filming with the BBC, are going to plan.

Kindest regards,

( Ian & Paula )

You made the course a great weekend boating experience

can't thank you enough for the above course.

It was informative, enjoyable and fun. Your wealth of anecdotes made the theory so understandable and very meaningful.

I went into the course with trepidation of my abilities as a helmsman (none). Yes I had a rudimentary understanding of locks and how to operate them but your tips and
hints were. invaluable. Previously, I'd kept a boat in a straight line on a long straight for all of 4-5minutes and there I was on Sunday reversing around a
marina.Whilst these skills were taught under instruction, you have given me the confidence to try it alone. I can't believe how I was able after two days to control the
boat to pick you and Natasha up at steps at lock entrance. The first time was a real, "Wow, I actually just did that!"

You made the course a great weekend boating experience, I'm so glad I booked with you.

Bob, Thank you and I look forward to meeting you again

I have learned a lot from this course and will highly recommend anyone to book the same.

I would like to thank you for such an enjoyable and enlightening 2 day RYA IWHC . (28th/29th Oct 2017)

Your calm easy going manner and knowledgeable guidance has given me the courage and confidence to steer my own boat (nb Scorparien II) when the time comes., That, plus all the fascinating stories of when you were a boy and the local history of the area, added to the enjoyment of the course, including the company of yourself and, Pete and Barbara sorry Chris lol.

I have learned a lot from this course and will highly recommend anyone to book the same.

I will also be looking out for your book of canal stories as I will definitely be buying a copy once published.

Thank you once again.
